Welcome Centurions Classes of 2017 and 2018!

The 2017-2018 year officially begins with a mandatory retreat at The Elms in Excelsior Springs, MO, beginning Wednesday, September 20 and ending Friday, September 22. The Retreat will provide you with a better understanding of the Centurions leadership program and share with you how Centurions will work over the next year. During Retreat, first year Centurions will get to know your fellow Centurions, learn about Task Force topics and Committees and decide which you’d like to be involved with. Of course, there will be some time for fun, too!

Remind me when we start and finish?

Retreat Check-in begins on Wednesday, 9/20 at 9:30 a.m. for 2nd Years & 10:00 a.m. for 1st Years.

We need everyone in their seats by 11:00 a.m. so please arrive on time. Excelsior Springs is not a hop, skip and a jump so please plan accordingly for your drive up. The Elms check-in time is not until 4:00 p.m., so it is very likely your room will not be ready upon arrival. You will be able to store your bags and we’ll get started with lunch and programming. In the afternoon we’ll have a break to allow time for everyone to check-in and get to their rooms. The cost of the rooms are completely covered, but you will be asked for a credit card upon check-in for any incidentals (if you have a roommate, whoever checks in first will need to do this!)

We will conclude no later than noon on Friday, but again, don’t plan a 12:30 p.m. meeting back in Kansas City if you can avoid it. There will be an optional lunch (on you) in Excelsior Springs at Wabash BBQ after retreat wraps up - join us if you can!

Room assignments:

Most of you will have a roommate upon arrival. Having a roommate is a great way to get to know a fellow Centurion! If you’ve been assigned a roommate, please refer to the e-mail that was sent last week.

Okay, what should I wear?

For general programming during the day, comfortable “smart casual” attire is recommended – nice jeans, button-downs, skirts, slacks etc. Feel free to reach out to your mentor for additional advice! Additionally, there is a pool and fitness center at the Elms, so bring a bathing suit and/or workout clothes, if you’d like to partake. A few of our social activities will be outdoors, so plan accordingly with hats/sunscreen/etc. Throughout retreat, feel free to have fun with the This is 40 retro theme! Flare is never frowned upon in Centurions.

A few special attire needs:

Wednesday: Smart casual by day and Family Feud costumes & banners by night. Casual/comfortable clothing for evening social activities to follow.

Thursday: Bring clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty for our service project. T-shirts will be provided. For the evening Olympic BBQ festivities, casual outdoor attire.

Friday: It’s KC Sports Friday - wear your favorite KC sport’s team attire!

For your viewing pleasure, checkout this video on what not to wear!

A few last notes and reminders:

Guidebook: Download the Guidebook app prior to retreat. Think of Guidebook as an electronic agenda. You will refer to the app at Retreat and during Task Force days. Bios and social media information for guests/speakers will be housed on this app. The retreat guide is live and to access it please use the passphrase: ThisIs40Retreat

We also have created a reference guidebook that you can use all year long.  It has helpful resources and links to all the information you may need such as by-laws, class info, legacy project, class lists, VolunteerMark, terminology, task forces and committees.  To access it use the passphrase: AllThingsCenturions

Social Media: We will discuss further at retreat, but let’s get the word out about the Centurions program and all the great things we are doing/learning about in the community. The retreat hashtag for the week is: #ThisIs40Retreat

GroupMe: You’ll be receiving a notification for GroupMe soon. This is a group chat app that Centurions use for casual chatter and banter. It's also a great way to coordinate for upcoming service projects. It’s not required by any means but it can be useful and we have a lot of fun with it.

***Don’t forget about your Family Feud banner, costumes & your name badge.
